Dear Friends and Members,
After a year of hard work we're almost there, the world premiere of In Situ
is just around the corner. The dancers and I began our final
phase of on-site rehearsals this week and so far we've been blessed
with gorgeous sunsets, light breezes and gentle showers - sometimes all
in the space of an hour. It feels wonderful to be back at the
library perched on top of the building with a bird's eye view of our
beautiful city! In Situ
celebrates the Vancouver Library Central Branch as a place for dreaming
and learning. The performance honours everyone who loves reading
and all those who gather to work, study and socialize at Library
Square. The theme is colliding worlds: a nexus of reality and
imagination where iconic literary characters mingle with the denizens
of this well-loved Vancouver landmark. Creating In Situ
would not have been possible without the support of the VPL and their
staff, and I am very grateful for their generous contribution to this
work.I hope you will be able to join us for this show. In Situ represents
many firsts for Aeriosa: a collaboration with Redshift's Vertical
Orchestra; a guest choreographer; two composers; 20 performers; three
locations; our tallest building yet. I've really enjoyed working
with such a remarkable team of talented creators, designers, performers
and support staff on this project. I look forward to sharing In Situ with you - and hearing your thoughts at our after party on March 20th!
Sincerely,
Julia Taffe Artistic Director

Dynamic aerial dance and live music combine in Aeriosa's
breathtaking In Situ!
In Situ is inspired by physical expression, engagement with the environment, and
societal contrasts - themes that permeate Vancouver's
cultural landscape and shape urban life on the West Coast.
In Situ
starts indoors and unfolds in the seven-story concourse of Vancouver's
Central Library, setting the scene for dynamic interaction between the dancers,
musicians and Moshe Safdie's striking architectural design. Artists from
Aeriosa and Redshift's Vertical Orchestra work
three-dimensionally, presenting spectacular suspended dance and original
spatial music throughout the venue at various heights. The audience will be
encouraged to flow through the building, led by the artists and guides who will
interact with them along the way, eventually ending outdoors in the serene
grandeur of Library Square.
Aeriosa
has commissioned an outstanding team of diverse artists under the direction
of artistic director Julia Taffe to
create a full-length interdisciplinary site-specific work: choreographer Amelia
Rudolph, founding artistic director of the internationally renowned vertical
dance company Project Bandaloop, and BC composers Jocelyn Morlock and Jordan
Nobles.

OUR MISSION
Vancouver-based Aeriosa Dance Society was founded by artistic
director/choreographer Julia Taffe in 2001 to manifest art,
performance, 21st century culture, and express human perception and
sensitivity through dance.
The company's artistic objectives include creating dance in
non-traditional environments, exploring aerial choreography and
revealing dance in the vertical realm to new audiences. The company
combines contemporary dance technique with expert knowledge of safe
rope rigging systems to create three-dimensional performances that
re-interpret gravity and respond to the performance location.
